Det faktum att Malmö väldigt snart står som värd för den stora politiska konferensen European Social Forum har sannerligen inte uppmärksammats mycket i svensk massmedia. Märkligt, med tanke på att minst 20 000 politiskt engagerade människor från tusentals organisationer i hela Europa, och därtill en mängd journalister, väntas inta staden när den årliga antiglobaliseringskonferensen går av stapeln 17-21 september 2008.
Arrangörerna skriver på sin hemsida: “During five days seminars and workshops will be mixed with culture, music, activism and demonstrations. But the forum is so much more than a meeting of a couple of days - now we in the Nordic countries and the rest of Europe have the chance to put forward alternatives and visions for the future. It is you and your organization that decide what will be the content of the forum, the programme is created from below by all who want to participate in the process. Many questions will be dealt with: from workers’ rights, equality, public service, development of democracy, resistance to war and racism, to global solidarity and a change in climate strategy. Because ESF is about changing society - not just having discussions. The European Social Forum is a unique arena for exchange of experiences, discussions, network building and planning of common initiatives and campaigns.”
Det första ESF hölls i Florens 2002. Därefter har konferensen arrangerats i Paris, London och Aten, och nu slutligen alltså i Øresund. Detta politiska möte är en europeisk variant av World Social Forum, den vänsterideologiska konferens som ursprungligen skapades som en motvikt till World Economic Forum i Davoz. Inom ESF finns flera mindre regionala och nationella fora. Den 28-30 september hålls t.ex. en nationell konferens i Danmark och i oktober är det dags för Skåne Social Forum i Lund.
